Spring 2021 Virtual Fair

Due to concerns surrounding COVID-19, Virginia Tech will be making adjustments to on-campus events and activities. However, Pamplin remains committed to connecting students and employers in a professional setting. In order to uphold this commitment and also maintain student, employer, and faculty health, Business Horizons will be hosting a virtual fair during the 2021 Spring semester. This page contains all information that students will need to register and navigate the fair. Students are encouraged to read the below information carefully to prepare for the fair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How will a virtual career fair work?

A: Upon entering the virtual fair, you will see  booths for each company in the virtual “lobby”. Students can click to enter and read more about the company and their opportunities, and then click to enter the line to wait for a chat.

 

Q: Do I have to “wait in line” to talk to recruiters? 

A: Yes, similar to the in-person fair, you will wait in a line to chat with a company representative one-on-one. After entering a company’s booth, you will see a green “chat” button at the top. This button will place you into line to wait for a chat. 

 

Q: How do I join? 

A: Students will need to register for the fair online (see student registration information above). Once you click on the brazen registration link (found on the Business Horizons website), you will receive email prompts to create a brazen profile and register for the Business Horizons career fair event. Once you have registered, on the day of the fair you will log into your brazen account to enter the fair. 

 

Q: Will I be able to speak with recruiters 1 on 1? 

A: All conversations on the Brazen platform will be 1 on 1 with a company representative.

 

Q: Will this be a chat or a video call? 

A: Once you have entered the line to chat, you will be automatically placed into a text-based chat when a representative becomes available. Employers will have the option to invite you to a video chat within Brazen. Make sure that you are prepared and ready for either option. 

 

Q: How do I hand out resumes? 

A: You will upload your resume when you sign up on the Brazen platform. When you enter a chat, they will be able to view your resume.

 

Q: Where is the new list of companies that will be attending the virtual fair?

A: Visit our “Companies Attending in the Spring” tab on our website to find the most up to date list of employers attending BH. This list will be updated as more employers register for BH, so be sure to check this often in the days leading up to the fair.

 

Q: What browser should I use? 

A: Chrome is recommended to have the best experience. 

 

Q: Can I view my conversation with recruiters afterwards? 

A: Yes, your chats will be saved. On the left side there is a history button where you can view your chats.

 

Q: Can I be in multiple lines at once?

A: Yes, you can be in multiple lines at once. Getting in all lines at once is actually a disadvantage, and could inadvertently cause longer wait times. The best strategy for students will be to enter two lines at once, and aim for one longer line and one shorter line. This will avoid the student getting “stuck” continuously in lines without being put into a chat. 

 

Q: What if I need to leave my computer but don't want to lose my place in line? 

A: You are able to change your status to offline, on the left hand side of the screen. This saves your spot, but you won't be put into a chat until you are back online. 

 

Q: What is the best strategy for freshmen attending the fair? 

A:Check out the attending company list to view which companies are open to recruiting freshmen. You can also enter different booths to conduct research and learn about different companies and the type of positions they typically offer. 

 

Q: Should I include my LinkedIn profile? 

A: Yes, we highly encourage you to include this. This gives employers another way to remember you and connect with you, and it also emphasizes your resume. 

 

Q: How long will chats be?

A: Students will be able to see the time limits in a chat, and will likely be anywhere from 5-10 minutes, but this may change depending on traffic in the fair. Keep in mind that the chat times are flexible, and ultimately controlled by the recruiter. A shorter conversation does not necessarily mean it is a bad conversation, so we encourage students to focus more on the flow of the conversation than the timer. However, students can be mindful if the time is nearing zero, to begin wrapping up the conversation, asking for follow-up/contact information, etc.

Q: Are there any other ways that I can prepare for the fair?

A: Yes! We will be hosting several prep workshops in the weeks leading up to BH covering general career fair prep, Brazen prep, resume resources, etc. Visit our Important Dates/Events tab to learn more. 

Q: What if I’m not able to talk to every company that I wanted to?

A: If you find that you are running out of time and unable to chat with every company on your list, we highly encourage you to use the “Drop-Off Note” feature within Brazen. This allows you to send a brief note and your information (including resume) to the recruiter. You can read more about how this feature works here.

 

Q: Can I view the event before the day of the fair?

A: Yes, you will be able to log into Brazen once you are registered and look around the site. This is important so that you get familiar with the platform. You can also look at the company booths to learn about their opportunities and do research. 

 

Q: When I log in, there is a spinning square. 

A: What does this mean? This just means there is a lot of traffic, so be patient. Make sure you are using chrome. You may need to log out and try logging in again.

 

Q:  I saw that the same company has multiple booths - is there any difference? 

A: Yes, it is very likely that some of our employers have purchased more than one booth for different functions (Ex. sales vs supply chain). The booths will be labeled with this information, both in the virtual fair and on our website. 

 

Q: I have received an e-mail from an employer inviting me to their booth - what does this mean? 

A: For the spring fair, reps are able to invite students to chat in their booth. Be sure to act on any e-mails like this that you receive. We cannot guarantee which employers will use this feature, so keep an eye on your e-mail in the days prior to the fair just in case. 

 

Q: How can I get into contact with the BH student team the day of the fair?

A: If you have questions the day of the fair, BH student team members will be available in a booth at the bottom of the lobby - feel free to jump in and ask questions or practice your elevator pitch with us!
